First-Place Volleyball Team Opens Ivy Second Half Friday At Home vs Penn
October 17, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
Princeton got back on track in Ivy League play last weekend with a pair of home sweeps against both Cornell and Columbia, and now the Tigers will try to start the second half of its Ivy season in similar fashion when they take on the Penn Quakers Friday night (7 pm) in Dillon Gym. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Princeton and Yale were the only teams to get first-place votes in the inaugural Ivy League preseason poll, and both teams share first place at the midway point by two matches over Cornell and three over a trio of other teams. While those two programs will meet a week from Friday night on ESPNU, Princeton will try to assure itself at least a share of first place for that match by extending its home win streak to seven matches, dating back to last year.
The Tigers opened their Ivy League season with a 3-0 win over Penn at the Palestra, a match that led Devon Peterkin to her second of three Ivy League Player of the Week awards. She had 16 kills and 13 digs in that victory over the Quakers, and she followed up with a huge effort against Cornell and Columbia last weekend to claim the honor for a third time. She is the only player in the Ivy League to rank in the Top 10 in kills, digs and hitting percentage in conference play this season.
It's been a balanced effort for the Tigers so far in Ivy play. Junior setter Jessie Harris leads the league in assists (12.6), while Clare Lenihan (.431) and Maggie O'Connell (.403) have paced the league's most efficient offense as the lone Ivy players hitting above .400. The trio of Peterkin, O'Connell, and Lenihan all rank in the Ivy Top 10 in kills.
Penn found its footing last weekend with a home sweep of Cornell and Columbia, a pair of teams inside the top of the Ivy standings. Senior setter Grace James moved into the top three in the Ivy League in assists (9.58), while junior Caroline Furrer ranks second in the league with 4.9 digs per set.
