Tiger Rowing Posts Impressive Day At Princeton Chase
October 29, 2018 | Heavyweight Rowing, Women's Rowing - Open, Women's Rowing - Lightweight, Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The brief fall competition season for the Princeton rowing teams concluded Sunday with the annual Princeton Chase. Like the Head of the Charles the previous weekend, there were plenty of impressive performances from both the men's and women's Tiger boats.
The heavyweights opened the day with a terrific effort on their home course. Princeton won the opening race in 12:54.598, nearly 10 seconds faster than any other boat in the field. Dartmouth was the only other boat to finish under 13:10, while Wisconsin, California and a Princeton 'B' boat rounded out the Top 5.
The reigning Ivy League champion Princeton women were equally impressive in their home debut, as the Tigers took the Princeton Chase in 14:44.560, more than 11 seconds faster than runner-up Yale. The Princeton 'B' boat also posted a Top-5 finish for the Tigers.
The lightweight women had a highly impressive showing in the open race, as the finished 11th overall, and ahead of several open 'A' and 'B' crews. The Tigers, who earned medals at both Sprints and IRAs each of the last two years, finished in 15:36.57 one week after an impressive second-place showing at the Head of the Charles.
The top two men's lightweight boats at the Head of the Charles held those positions at the Princeton Chase. Cornell won the race in 13:10.182, while Princeton took second in 13:15.084; no other crew was within nine seconds of either crew. The Princeton 'B' boat added a Top 10 finish in 13:48.406.
Princeton had several very strong performances when the fours hit the water. The heavyweights took three of the top four spots, including a win in 14:46.678. The open women went 1-2, with a win in 16:43.77, while the lightweight women placed eighth in the open field in 17:40.718.
The Class of 2022 made their debuts Sunday, starting with a men's heavyweight boat that finished second to California in 13:47.518. The open freshmen added a win in 16:01.794.
