Verbeek Goal Nets Tie In Weekend Opener At Syracuse
November 10, 2018 | Women's Ice Hockey
Sophomore Rachel McQuigge made 30 saves on 31 shots, and classmate Sarah Verbeek added her first goal of the season late in the first period to help the Princeton women's hockey team to a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon in Syracuse. The two teams will close a weekend series Sunday at 2 pm.
Verbeek took a pass from Chloe Harvey and scored an even strength goal with just under five minutes remaining in the opening period, which evened the score after a Syracuse goal during the middle of the period. From that point, the defenses and goalies took over, and McQuigge answered the call time and again. Syracuse had 19 shots on goal between the second and third periods, and then two more in overtime, but McQuigge was a wall in front of the net. Her effort helped Princeton improve to 3-2-2 for the season, and it extends the Tigers' unbeaten streak to five games.
Princeton had a massive faceoff advantage, as the Tigers won 46 of 62 draws, including 22 by Karlie Lund and Sharon Frankel. Both penalty kills also excelled, as the two teams combined to go 0-for-8 on power plays. Princeton killed off five of them, including two in the final period.
Carly Bullock had a team-best four shots on goal for Princeton, while Verbeek had three, including the tying tally.
