George Washington Gets Past Princeton, 64-49
November 11, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Princeton led early, but the Tiger women's basketball team spent most of Sunday's game at George Washington in chase mode as the Colonials kept Princeton from rallying in a 64-49 win in D.C.
Though Princeton had a 4-2 lead with just more than three minutes gone in the opening quarter, a George Washington 7-0 run gave the Colonials the lead, and as it turned out, for good. The gap grew as large as 22 points just before the midway point of the third quarter at 40-18, and though Princeton drew as close as seven points at 51-44 with more than six minutes to go in the fourth, the Tigers got no closer.
Both teams moved to 1-1 with the result. George Washington bounced back from an opening loss to James Madison while the Tigers couldn't follow up their season-opening win at Rider with another W.
Princeton's 22 turnovers were just one more than the Colonials' 21, but the effect was much more costly for the Tigers as GW had 31 points off those giveaways to 18 Tiger points off the Colonials' turnovers. The Tigers compounded that with 29 percent shooting from the field, including 7 of 38 (.184) from 3-point range, and the Colonials outdid that by shooting 44.2 percent overall. GW took just 11 shots from 3, making four of those.
McKenna Haire led Princeton with 13 points while Julia Cunningham added 10, and GW's Mei-Lyn Bautista had a game-high 15 points. GW's Sarah Overcash was a points away from a double-double, grabbing a game-high 10 boards.
The Tigers will look to bounce back with a Wednesday night visit from Seton Hall, set for a 6 p.m. start in Jadwin Gym.
