Cannady Scores 21 in Season Debut, but FDU Wins, 77-66
November 21, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Devin Cannady led the way with 21 points in his season debut Wednesday night in Jadwin Gym as the Princeton men's basketball team came up just short against Fairleigh Dickinson, 77-66.
Myles Stephens, now averaging 19 points a game on the new season, joined Cannady in double figures with 18 points, while Darnell Edge led FDU with 28 points as one of four Knights in double figures.
Cannady returned after missing the first two games to injury and debuted with the 17th 20-point game of his career, going 8 of 13 from the field and 4 of 5 from 3 while pulling down seven rebounds.
"It just felt great to be back in a game," Cannady said. "You have Myles doing his thing, Richmond (Aririguzoh) playing well. It was just nice, I think, for the freshmen to get a taste of what it's like to have me and, hopefully, my vocal leadership on the floor."
The Tigers will head to Monmouth Saturday for a 3 p.m. game to wrap the weekend.
"It's always nice to have games not too far away after a tough loss," Cannady said. "It's going to be nice to be with our families, hang out with our teammates on Thanksgiving, but Friday has to be a really great practice and then we can get back at it at Monmouth on Saturday."
FDU narrowly outshot Princeton from the field 47 percent to 43 percent but compounded that by making 12 3-pointers to Princeton's seven and outrebounding the Tigers 36-26. Princeton held a six-point lead at 34-28 inside the final two minutes of the first half, but an 8-2 halftime-bridging run for the Knights tied it at 36-36 less than two minutes after halftime. Princeton last led at 56-53 with less than 10 minutes to go in the game, but a 13-2 run of more than six minutes put FDU up eight with less than four minutes to go and the Knights never led by fewer than six after that, growing the lead as large as 15 points.Â
"I think we've got to work really hard on - we missed a lot of layups, making those layups and then tightening up on the defensive end," Mitch Henderson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of Princeton basketball, said. "(FDU coach) Greg (Herenda), his staff, his players, I thought they played really hard. They played together. They made big shots. They were rooting for each other. They were connected. I think that's how you win games."

The Tigers held FDU scoreless for nearly the first five minutes to get out to a 6-0 lead, including this nice pass from #DC3 (and the hockey assist to Ryan Schwieger) on a Myles Stephens dunk.
