Cannady's Second Half Helps Tigers Rally, Beat Monmouth 60-57
November 24, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Devin Cannady scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half and the Princeton men's basketball team rallied to beat Monmouth 60-57 Saturday in West Long Branch.
"It's one of those wins – I hope that I'm right – but I really feel like it's a gutsy win and it's going to propel our group forward in a really cool way," Mitch Henderson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of Princeton men's basketball, said.
Check out highlights from Saturday's game below:
Princeton trailed by as many as 12 points as late as with 13-plus minutes to go at 40-28. The deficit still stood at 10 with just less than nine minutes to go, but that's when the rally began.
Â
A 15-4 run from that point, including eight points from Cannady, gave Princeton its first lead of the game at 52-51 with 3:38 to go, and from there, the teams were never more than three points apart.
"Every time we would go to the bench for timeouts and medias, all my teammates on the bench, 'Keep shooting, Devin, keep shooting,' and so when you have that kind of trust and Myles' (Stephens) ability to be at the rim and Jose (Morales) coming off ball screens, Richmond (Aririguzoh) getting rebounds, they open shots up for me," Cannady said. "I was off, definitely, for the first half and then when you see a couple go in, at least for me at least one shot, go in, then you build that confidence."
Cannady broke a 55-55 tie with a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left, and though Monmouth had the opportunity to tie after Deion Hammond was fouled shooting a 3, Hammond made only two shots, and the Hawks were forced to foul. Cannady, a career 90-percent free throw shooter, nailed a pair, and Monmouth couldn't get a 3-point try off on its last possession as Princeton left with the win.
Â
Cannady, who missed the team's first two games due to injury, has put up 21 points in each of his first two games back and is shooting .556 (15-27) from the field and .563 (9-16) from 3.
The Tigers will hit the road again Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game at Maine before returning home next Saturday against George Washington for a 4 p.m. start.
