November 09, 2018 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The opening week continues for the Princeton Tigers as they travel down to Washington, D.C. for a contest vs. the George Washington Colonials on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Â
Before we move on the George Washington game … let's take one last look at the Rider contest …
Princeton 89, Rider 65 – Recap | Highlights
Stella Johnson – Johnson led the Broncs in scoring with 21 points, going of 8-of-16 from the floor. Her stat-line doesn't tell the whole story though as all of her points came with the home squad down by at least double-digits. Â
Â
Lexi Posset – The Bronc registered 11 points on an inefficient 13 shot attempts including 1-of-5 from beyond the arc. Nine of her 11 points came in the first half as Princeton led by 25 at the break.
Â
Shooting – If it felt like Princeton didn't miss in the first quarter … well they basically didn't. The Tigers shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17) while Gabrielle Rush dropped 15 of her career-high 25 in the frame. The Tigers rolled off 15 consecutive points at one point during the stanza and led by 18 after 10 minutes. Head coach Courtney Banghart's team wasn't really threatened the rest of the way.
Â
Carlie Littlefield – The sophomore had a tremendous start to the 2018-19 season, posting 16 points, five assists, three rebounds and a steal. Most of her work came in the first half as Princeton shot 60 percent in the first 20 minutes.
Â
Things to watch out for against George Washington …
Â
Low Output – The Colonials scored just 37 points in its season opening loss to James Madison last night. It was a poor shooting night for George Washington, as it posted a 23.5 shooting percentage (12-of-51). The Colonials contributed three three-pointers and missed 11 free-throws.
Â
Mei-Lyn Bautista – The Colonial picked up her first career preseason honor, being named to the all-conference second team. Last season, she secured career-highs in points (8.1), rebounds (1.8), assists (4.3) and steals (2.2). She contributed 10 points against James Madison along with five steals. She added four points last year against the Tigers in a 20-point loss.
Â
The Class of 2022 – The freshman group for Princeton got acclimated pretty quickly, adding 30 combined points in the victory over Rider. Each freshman that played scored in the game, highlighted by Neenah Young and Julia Cunningham's eight points each.
Â
Defense, Defense, Defense - This game likely feature two of the best defenses in the country. In 2017-18, George Washington was 50th in Division-I in scoring defense (58.5). The fifth seed in the A-10 Tournament in 2018, the Colonials allowed just 52.5 points per game on their way to a conference crown. Princeton was 13th in the NCAA at 55.1 points per game.
