Princeton Finishes Second In NCAA Regional, Advances To NCAA Finals
November 09, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
Final Results
The Princeton women's cross country team is running all the way to the NCAA championships.
Princeton had its top five runners finish in the top 20 at the NCAA Regional at Penn State en route to a comfortable second-place finish, which earned the team an automatic spot in the NCAA finals at the University of Wisconsin next Saturday (Nov. 17).
The race was held on a 38-degree day, with heavy rain that made for a muddy course. Villanova went 1-3-5-9-15 to win the team title with 33 points. Princeton was second with 64, easily beating out third-place Penn State, who had 91 points. The top two teams automatically advanced to Wisconsin.
"Today was truly a tremendous team effort," Princeton head coach Brad Hunt said. "We entered the day as a significant underdog. The women knew that they wanted to get to the national meet and there was only one way to do it, race to finish in the top two. This crew should be so proud of themselves for what they made happen by racing as a team."
Princeton, who finished third at the Ivy League Heptagonal championships two weeks ago, was led by sophomore Sophie Cantine, who finished in eighth place in 21:24. By the time another 10 seconds elapsed, she'd been followed across the line by Madison Offstein (11th), Alie Fordyce (12th) and Allie Klimkiewicz (13th), and then Melia Chittenden sealed it eight more seconds after that with her 20th place finish.
All five scorers earned all-region honors.
Princeton came into the meet as the fourth-ranked team in the region, behind Villanova, Penn State and West Virginia.
The last time Princeton advanced to the NCAA meet as a team was in 2015, when the Tigers were an at-large selection. Princeton's last automatic bid was in 2009, when Princeton did so for the fifth straight time.
