In the last meet before the postseason the Princeton Tigers used the Princeton Invitational to tune up some of their runners for the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship next weekend as well as showcase some of the powerful runners who won't be making the squad list to Dartmouth.
Saturday's meet marked the last indoor meet that some seniors will get to compete in the Orange and Black uniform. This fact had a special impact on senior Melana Hammel, who wanted to make her last indoor meet one of her best. Hammel kicked off the race exceptionally fast and finished with a season best of 2:17.41—just .25 off her overall personal best.
Roommate and teammate Kennedy O'Dell could not be more excited for her, "Melana ran the race she's wanted to run all season. She got out early and was aggressive from the start. She ran with her heart on her sleeve and killed it. I've never been more proud of her." Head coach Michelle Eisenreich was very excited about Melana's race too, "it meant so much for her and for the team to see her have that success."
Another highlight of the meet was the mile, with five runners placing in the top seven. The pack was led by junior Mim Buscher, who ran a 4-second personal best and finally achieved her goal of running a sub-5 minute mile time, 4:57.97. Buscher has made incredible strides over the season, cutting her mile time down by 19 seconds since her season opener of 5:16.91.
Following Buscher in the PRs race today was freshman Katherine Leggat-Barr in second place with another sub-5 mile time and personal best at 4:58.33. Sophomore Erin Endres placed fourth at 5:03.65 and her classmate Sierra Castenada was directly behind her in fifth at 5:06.25. Senior Melinda Renuart finished seventh at 5:07.65 to end the stellar race for the Orange & Black.
Another PR came from junior Frances Lodge in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.12 for fourth place. Lodge is one of the runners who will be competing at Heps, so this peak performance comes at the perfect time and shows strong potential for a great race next weekend. In the same race, junior Mikaela Sawyer placed eightht at 9.53 and sophomore Carson Brisk was 10th 10.31.
In the 60m dash, senior Christina Walter is peaking at the perfect time as well with a season best of 7.71 for fourth.
In the meet's 400m race, sophomore Heide Baron finished in third at 57.98. Baron also had an exciting race in the 200m dash, placing fifth by just .02 at 26.117. Heide is meant to compete as a relay leg next weekend and this week's meet shows that she is strong and ready to come back despite a small injury setback. Sister senior Madelyn Baron and junior Mikeala Sawyer also competed in the 200m dash and placed 10th and 11th.
The next first-place finish for the Tigers in the meet came from freshman Samantha Anderson in the 500m. Anderson ran a 1:17.78 split—just .23 off of her own personal best from the HYP meet earlier in the season.
In the field events, O'Dell came out to impress once again. O'Dell placed second in both the weight throw and the shot put with respective throws of 17.84m (58-6.5) and 13.83m (45-4.5). Freshman Julia Harisay also threw 12.85m (42-2) in the shot put for a collegiate personal best and a sixth-place finish.
Senior Delaney Kerkhof cleared 10.92m (35-10) in the meet's triple jump event for a second-place medal for the Tigers.
