HANOVER, N.H. (2/25/18) - The Tigers entered the second day of competition of the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships just two points away from first place. Despite a dip in the overall team score, Princeton ended the meet with some exceptionally strong individual performances.
Day 2 of competition began with the mile. Freshman Sophie Cantine had a stellar last race of the indoor season. She came out and ran a 4:52.97 time and placed fourth to become one of the twelve of the team's scorers for the day. In the same race, junior Maddie Offstein ran a personal best and scored for the Orange & Black in sixth place at 4:53.32.
The team also had fantastic unanticipated success in the 500m race. Sophomore Devon Block-Funkhouser and junior Allison Glossinger placed fifth and sixth respectively to score for the Tigers. Block-Funkhouser ran a personal best of 1:15.83 and Glossinger, who ran a personal best yesterday, ran 1:16.33 today.
One of the highlights of the meet was senior Christina Walter's performances in both the 60m and the 200m dashes. Yesterday, Walter broke the school record for the 60 and placed fifth with a personal best of 7.56. Today, she crossed the finish line for the finals in sixth at 7.62. The senior also added to her team's score through her performance in the 200, where she placed fifth at 24.61.
In the 800m race, Jackie Berardo showed up strong once again and ran a 2:09.95 for second place. Classmate Anna Jurew also followed suit from yesterday's performance, clocking in at 2:49.31 in third of the 1000m.
Junior Gabi Forrest used yesterday's day of racing in the 3,000m as a learning strategy for an outstanding performance today in the 5,000. Forrest, who placed fourth in the 3k, commented, "The 3000m didn't go exactly as planned but I learned a lot and applied it today in the 5k. I think our team's strength today was exactly this, learning from the prelims and running smart finals." Forrest ended the season with a 11-second PR in the 5k at 16:28.03. Two other Tigers ran personal bests in the 5k including freshman Melia Chittendan at 16:46.09 and senior Melissa Reed at 16:56.32.
The throwing events this year were very competitive, but that didn't stop senior Kennedy O'Dell from competing extremely well. After throwing a personal best in the shot put yesterday, O'Dell placed third today in the weight throw with a 18.51m ( 60-08.75) throw.
In the triple jump, Kerri Davidson cleared 12.27m (40-03.25) for fourth place. Freshmen Kara Steele scored in sixth place with a jump of 12.27m (40-03.25), and and Katherine Barnett was eighth at 11.63m (38-02.00).
Head coach Michelle Eisenreich commented that she was really happy with how the team fought in each individual race and going forward the Tigers "big goal is to figure out how we go from here to putting ourselves in a place to defend our third-place finish from the outdoor season last year."
Princeton's first outdoor meet will be in Jacksonville, Fla., at the UNF Spring Break Open on March 23.
