Tigers Set Numerous Top-5 Times, Claim Several All-Ivy Honors During Day 3 Of Ivy Championships
February 23, 2018 | Men's Swimming and Diving
The Princeton men's swimming and diving team placed 11 individuals in championship finals Friday night, and it sent two divers to Saturday's 3-meter final, to highlight the third day of the Ivy League Championship. The Tigers also set a number of top-five program times during the evening, which concluded with Princeton remaining in second place overall.
Harvard grabbed a commanding lead with 1090 points, but Princeton created some separation between itself and the rest of the field. The Tigers enter Saturday with 869 points, while Yale (730), Columbia (718.5), and Penn (671.5) are in a tight battle for third place.

Princeton freshman Sam Tarter opened the session by taking seventh in the 400 IM in 3:51.79, the ninth-fastest time in program history.
The Tigers excited a strong home crowd at DeNunzio Pool by having three race for top-five spots in the 100 fly final. Senior co-captain Ben Schafer made a push for his first individual Ivy League title against Harvard senior Steven Tan, but he ultimately finished second in 46.80. That result earns second-team All-Ivy League honors for Schafer, matching the Thursday night effort by fellow captain Zach Buerger.
Buerger made a strong push in the 100 fly as well, finishing fourth overall in 47.01. His prelim time of 46.83 improved upon his own third-fastest time in the event, while junior Cole Buese finished fifth in the fly final in 47.13. His prelim time of 46.90 now stands fourth-fastest in program history; Buese's strongest event is the 200 fly, a Saturday event where he will enter as the top seed.
Junior Murphy McQuet took fourth in the 200 free in 1:35.56, which nearly put him in the top-three in program history. He already held the fourth-fastest position, though he improved it by a quarter second.
Freshman Corey Lau made his Ivy League Championships A final debut in the 100 breast, and he moved into the Princeton Top 5 with a time of 54.33, which placed eighth in the event.
Princeton had another strong effort in the 100 back, as it placed three Tigers in the championship final again. Senior Alexander Lewis finished third in the event in 47.14, a time that also stands third on the all-time Princeton list. Buese took fourth in the event in 47.54, and his prelim time of 47.26 is now the fifth-fastest in school history. Senior Corey Okubo took eighth in the event, though his prelim time of 47.73 is sixth-fastest in school history.
The Princeton duo of Colton Young and Charlie Minns qualified for their second 'A' diving final of the weekend, as both were among the top eight divers in the 3-meter prelims. That final will be held during Saturday's final session of the championship meet.
The 400 medley relay of Lewis, Lau, Buerger and Schafer pushed Harvard in the 400 medley relay, but they settled for second in a time of 3:10.96.
