Brown Holds Off Wrestling Rally In 17-15 Win
February 04, 2018 | Wrestling
For the second straight day, the Princeton wrestling team experienced a 5-5 split in an Ivy League road match. Unfortunately, this time the bonus points went the other way, as the Bears used a pair of major decisions to score a 17-15 team win over Princeton.
Brown raced out to a 10-3 lead, thanks in part to a major decision at 133 and then an upset at 149. Brown's Zach Krause handed 10th-ranked Matthew Kolodzik his first career Ivy League loss by scoring the only takedown of the final period in a 7-4 win.
Princeton was without junior co-captain Mike D'Angelo, but sophomore Leonard Merkin again came off the bench and produced for the Tigers. He knocked off Brown veteran Justin Staudenmayer 10-4, and senior co-captain Jonathan Schleifer followed up with an 8-5 decision to get Princeton back within one point.
Brown won the next two, including one by major decision, to open an eight-point lead and force Princeton to compete for bonus points. Head coach Chris Ayres inserted Ian Baker, one of Princeton's top pinners, at 197 to try to get six team points. Baker was able to get the win, but a 5-2 decision left Patrick Brucki as the final option. The 17th-ranked freshman at 197 wrestled up and gave up a significant weight advantage to Ian Butterbrodt, but he still fought hard for a 4-1 victory.
Princeton will return home next weekend to take on both Columbia (Friday, 6) and Cornell (Saturday, 6). Both matches will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
