Women's Lightweights Head West, Will Measure Themselves vs Reigning IRA Champions
March 27, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
Head coach Paul Rassam is right where he wants to be with his women's lightweight rowing program. His squad has been infused by two strong recruiting classes, including the talented Class of 2021, and they are able to train under the steady leadership of both senior captain Emily Schneider and classmate Megan Mirabella, the steady coxswain who has led the Tiger 1V since her earliest days at Princeton.
The trajectory of the program is a positive one, for sure. Where it stands right now, heading into the 2018 season, could be a little bit more of a mystery, but Rassam will get a pretty definitive answer soon enough. The Princeton women's lightweight rowing team will head to Redwood Shores, Calif., this weekend to take on reigning IRA national champion Stanford Saturday morning in the Class of 2015 Cup regatta.
This is the second year for the Class of 2015 Cup regatta, which debuted last year on Lake Carnegie with Stanford posting a win by 8.8 seconds. The Tigers actually cut into that margin a few weeks later at the IRA National Championships, and they flipped prior results against both Radcliffe and Wisconsin to return to the medal podium for the first time since 2011. Princeton had a memorable postseason — the Tigers also won bronze at Eastern Sprints — and it will try to use another group of strong recruits to continue building upwards.
The Tigers headed into the winter with a record-setting effort at the 2017 Princeton Chase, and they put in the work over the last few months to believe they can maintain their position among the elite programs in the sport. They will be able to test themselves over the following three weeks, and all at much closer locations. Princeton will take on its two most historic rivals, Radcliffe (April 7) and Georgetown (April 21), in Cup races on Lake Carnegie on both April 7 and April 21, and it will head to nearby Lake Mercer April 14 for the Knecht Cup regatta.
Racing on Lake Mercer will provide good practice for the Tigers, who plan to have their best speed there June 3 when they compete for gold at the IRA Championships. Princeton can assume it will see Stanford once again that weekend, and it will know soon enough just where it stands against the Cardinal heading into the 2018 season.
