Relay Drops 31-Year Record at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas (4/14/18) - Princeton had scorers in nine of the 11 events it entered today as the Tigers track & field team finished in third place at the Texas Invitational.

Highlighting the meet was the fall of a 31-year record in the 4x100 relay. The 4x100 of junior Charlie Volker, freshman Austin Carbone, sophomore Joseph McGrath and senior Carrington Akosa ran a Princeton record 40.05 to win the race and surpassing the record of 40.31 from 1987. It is the fifth-best time in Ivy League history, and the fastest since 2014.

Sophomore Joey Daniels won the 110-meter hurdles at 13.90. Daniels who set the Princeton record in the first meet of the season with a 13.88 – the fifth fastest time in Ivy League history – has now run under 14 seconds in the hurdles twice this season.

Freshman Robbie Otal was the runner-up in the discus launching a PR of 52.78 (173-2) on his opening throw. He breaks into the Princeton top-10 with the ninth-best throw in program history. Otal also had marks of 52.59, 51.17, 50.89, 50.43 and 49.68. Senior Mitchel Charles was seventh with a 50.55 (165-10) on his first throw.

In the high jump, freshman Jeffrey Hollis finished tied for third with a season-best 2.02 (6-7.5) making it over the height on his second attempt. Hollis easily cleared the opening height of 1.97 (6-5.5) on his first try.

Another big effort came from the triple jumper duo of junior Stefan Amokwandoh and senior Lane Russell. Amokwandoh took fourth in the event with a jump of 14.96 (49-1) on his final effort. He also had jumps of 14.50, 14.50, 14.43 and 14.26. Russell was fifth with a leap of 14.83 (48-8).

In the 400 hurdles, both senior Spencer Long and sophomore Gab Montefalcone ran season bests. Long finished ninth at 53.34 and Montefalcone was 10th at 53.59.

Senior Josh Freeman has stayed consistent in the 400, running another 48-second lap this season. In all three meets this season he has run 48 seconds with a 48.09, 48.04 and today's 48.09. Freshman Brennan O'Connor PR'ed in the event with a 49.21.

In his first time competing in the 800 this season, freshman Sam Ellis took fourth at 1:55.43. After 400 meters he was in sixth place with a 56.33 before moving up three places on the final lap.

In the 400 relay, Austin Carbone, Connor Matthews, Cole Bransford and Freeman took fourth with a time of 3:15.44.
