PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers make the trip to the Big Apple to battle the Columbia Lions at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium this weekend Apr. 21-22.
A doubleheader will take place on Saturday (Apr. 21) beginning at 11:30 a.m. The two will finish the series on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
Princeton comes into the series fourth in the Ivy League standings. Yale sits at the top with a 9-3 conference record, followed by Columbia (8-4) and Dartmouth (4-3-1). Penn (5-6-1), Harvard (4-5), Brown (3-9) and Cornell (2-6) are behind the Tigers.
What Did You Miss?
- For the second time this season, the Princeton and Harvard got postponed due to weather. The two Ivy foes' series will take place Apr. 24 and 25 at Clarke Field.
- The Penn Quakers took two of three from Princeton last weekend.
- In game one, the Quakers' six-run sixth inning led to a 7-2 victory. Penn broke through in the sixth inning. After two groundouts to begin the frame, a walk was followed by five consecutive singles before Matt Tola rounded out the stanza with a two-run double.
- Ben Gross threw a complete game shutout, scattering nine hits and striking out seven in a 3-0 game two win. It's his first ever complete game shutout and the second complete game of his career. Jesper Horsted and Taylor Beckett had three hits each.
- Penn banged out 18 hits and scored seven times over the first three innings to put the game out of reach. Seven different Tigers had a hit in the game as Horsted got on base three times.
- After an 0-16 stretch (Mar. 9-17) at the plate, Horsted has seven multi-hit games. He has raised his batting average 134 points and now leads the team in hitting (.300). The outfielder leads the squad in total hits (27), walks (14) and is second in total bases (35).
- Princeton has four hitters with a batting average over .280 in Horsted, Asher Lee-Tyson, Beckett and Chris Davis. Now that Beckett has enough at-bats to qualify among league leaders, his .482 slugging percentage sits fourth in the Ivy League. Seven of his 16 hits have gone for extra bases.
- Eight different players have at least 20 total bases while Flynn, Conor Nolan and Horsted have at least 10 RBI.
- Nolan (12), Lee-Tyson (11) and Davis (10) also have at least 10 walks and a .340 on-base percentage.
- The Princeton pitching staff is averaging 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings with Eli Kimbell, Tanner Kliewer, James Proctor and Keith Gabrielson averaging at least 9.0 per nine innings pitched.
- Gross has not allowed more than three earned runs in his last five starts and has 27 strikeouts in his last four outings.
- Kliewer (three) and Kimbell (two) have combined for five saves this season.
- The Tigers had three alums make the Big League last season in Matt Bowman '14, Danny Barnes and Chris Young '02.
- Bowman finished his second year with the St. Louis Cardinals with another sub-4.00 ERA (3.99). He was tied for seventh in all of baseball with 75 appearances, adding three wins, two saves and 46 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings of work.
- Barnes completed his first full season with the Blue Jays, posting a 3.55 ERA in 60 outings of the bullpen. He had 62 strikeouts in 66 innings, earned three victories and finished 13 games for the Blue Jays.
- Seven other alums, Ross Ohlendorf '05 (Japan), David Hale '11 (AAA), Jack Murphy (AAA), Mike Ford '14 (AAA), Alec Keller '14 (AA), Cameron Mingo '16 (A) and Danny Hoy '16 (A), played professional baseball last season.
- This year, Barnes has not allowed a run in his last nine appearances.
- David Hale and Mike Ford are playing together with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (AAA).
- The Lions are 13-21 overall and 8-4 in the Ivy League. Columbia has earned victories over USF, UTSA, Yale, Harvard, St. John's, Dartmouth, Brown and Fordham. The team has won five of its last six games.
- Columbia has three hitters with a batting average over .300, led by Joe Engel's .344 mark.
- Chandler Bengtson leads the squad with a .533 slugging percentage. He has 14 extra-base hits including eight home runs. He has 24 RBI and 22 walks as well.
- Harrisen Egly has been the Lions' best starting pitcher in 2018, posting an ERA of 4.82 in 37 1/3 innings.
- Columbia's best reliever has been Lucas Hall. He has 17 strikeouts in almost 11 innings of work, sitting with a 1.69 ERA.
- Columbia took all four matchups vs. the Tigers last season.
