Haddad and Gross Help Princeton Pick Up Split at Columbia

NEW YORK – Behind Ramzi Haddad's four-hit performance and Ben Gross' terrific outing, the Princeton Tigers (9-17, 6-5 Ivy) earned a doubleheader split against the Columbia Lions (14-22, 9-5 Ivy) at Satow Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: Columbia 2, Princeton 0
Conor Nolan and Asher Lee-Tyson led the squad with three hits each. Princeton finished with 10 hits in the contest. Ryan Smith earned a tough luck loss, allowing two earned runs. Eli Kimbell struck out five hitters in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Princeton opened up the contest, getting two runners in scoring position in the first inning, but a strikeout completed the at-bat. In the bottom of the frame, it looked like the Lions were going to take the lead, but this impressive relay throw from Jake Boone denied a run at the plate …
Columbia broke through with a two-run sixth inning. An infield single, hit-by-pitch and walk loaded the bases with one out. Ben Porter provided the clutch knock, scoring two on a single to centerfield. Kimbell limited the damage with consecutive strikeouts.
Princeton put together two more scoring chances. In the eighth stanza, the Tigers got two runners on with one out, but an infield popout and groundout ended the threat. In their last at-bat, Haddad led off with a single and moved to second on a hit-by-pitch from Taylor Beckett. The Tigers couldn't push across a run though as Columbia's closer Lucas Hall got three strikeouts to give the Lions a victory.
Porter had two hits, two RBI and two walks to pace the home team's offense. Jordan Chriss went 5 2/3 innings, striking out six. Hall earned his fourth save of the season in the win.
Game 2: Princeton 10, Columbia 5
Eight different Tigers combined for 14 hits highlighted by Haddad's four knocks. Haddad and Boone had two RBI each while Jesper Horsted walked three times. Ben Gross nabbed his fourth win of the season, striking out seven in seven innings of work.
Trailing 1-0, Princeton registered six runs in the fourth inning. After a leadoff walk from Horsted. Beckett singled, advancing Horsted to third. This double from Conor Nolan tied the game at 1-all …
The Tigers kept up the offensive firepower as Flynn led off the fifth frame with a triple. He quickly scampered home on a hit from Haddad. Boone ripped this two-run double to right center, giving Princeton a 9-1 advantage …
Princeton and Columbia complete the series tomorrow with first pitch set for 1 p.m. The Tigers have not won a series against the Lions since 2011.

Haddad's third hit of the contest plated the Tigers' 10th run in the next at-bat. Gross faced the minimum in the sixth and seventh innings before the Lions made a push in the eighth. Three straight hits gave the Lions two runs, leading to a pitching change. A two-run home run from Randell Kanemaru made the score, 10-5.
