April 25, 2018 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Harvard Crimson (19-17, 9-6 Ivy) defeated the Princeton Tigers (10-20, 7-8 Ivy), 8-3, at Clarke Field on Wednesday afternoon at Clarke Field.
Ramzi Haddad and Jesper Horsted led the Tigers with two hits each. Ryan Smith struck out eight hitters in his four innings of work, earning a no decision in the loss.
Princeton loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, but couldn't push across a run as Harvard's starter Simon Rosenblum-Larson posted two strikeouts to retire the side. Hunter Bigge's solo blast in the second gave the Crimson a 1-0 lead. Harvard added to its lead with an RBI knock from Patrick McColl and run-scoring double from Patrick Robinson in the third inning.
Conor Nolan doubled in Asher Lee-Tyson in the third frame, cutting the Tigers' deficit to two, 3-1. The Tigers put together another scoring opportunity in the sixth. Horsted and Nolan led off with walks while Taylor Beckett was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no out. Joseph Flynn knocked in Horsted, but was tagged out between first and second base. Haddad tied the contest as his base hit snuck through the third baseman and shortstop.
In the next half frame, Harvard took the lead with a three-spot. Devan Peterson's run-producing hit put the Crimson in front, 4-3, before a McColl two-run double set the score at 6-3. A wild pitch and sacrifice fly gave Harvard its seventh and eighth runs in the eighth inning.
Matt Rothenberg led the Crimson with three hits and scored two runs while McColl picked up three RBI. Eno Stefanoni threw four shutout innings to earn the victory for Harvard.
Princeton welcomes the top squad in the Ivy League, Yale (11-4), to Clarke Field this weekend. The two conference foes square off with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. before one contest on Sunday that will get underway at 1 p.m.
