Strong Senior Class Ready For Final Race On Lake Carengie, As Tigers Host Wisconsin & Syracuse
April 25, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Open
Senior co-captain Riley MacAulay and her classmates may allow themselves a moment or two Saturday morning to savor the moments before their final races on Lake Carnegie, but you can be assured that they will be in the proper frame of mind by their first stroke.
After all, that focus and determination is part of what has made this Class of 2018 such a special one.
The nine seniors on the 10th-ranked Princeton open rowing team will lead the Tigers into the regular season finale Saturday morning against both #13 Wisconsin and Syracuse in a home regatta set to be streamed on the Ivy League Network. The first race will be the 1V showdown at 10:15, which will immediately follow the heavyweight 1V race against Brown for the Content Cup.
MacAulay, who shares captain duties with classmate Rachel Reed, has won a lot of races on Lake Carnegie throughout her career. She spent a significant amount of time in her first three years in a four, but she has been the bow for the 2V8 throughout the 2018 season.
"Going into Senior Day, I have started reflecting on my experiences racing on Carnegie over the past four years and all the hard-fought battles we have had on that course," she said. "Capping off those memories with a successful day on Saturday would be a great way to end our regular season."
And it would be a terrific way to head into the postseason, where Princeton will try to win a third straight Ivy League title and then compete with the nation's top crews at the NCAA Championships. Though lineups for NCAAs are far from being set, there is a strong likelihood that the majority of Princeton's nine seniors will race in one of those three NCAA boats, a testament to the work that class has put in, especially this year. The 2V in particular has been senior-laden, with as many as six in the boat on a weekend.
"We have a senior class of nine, and every one of us has stepped up into a leadership role of our own this year," MacAulay said. "We are strong together as a group, and even more so as unique and diverse individuals. I feel really fortunate to be part of this senior class, and to be part of such a senior-filled boat this spring."
One feeling that MacAulay would like to change from 2017 is the one the Tigers felt after the NCAA Championships. The Tigers placed 10th at the national regatta, and they certainly felt they had a better performance in them. Racing new, elite competition should help Princeton feel even more prepared should they receive a bid to the 2018 NCAAs in Sarasota, Fla.
"After the conclusion of our season last year, the returning team gathered to talk about what we could do differently this year and one of the key ideas we had was racing more out of league," MacAulay said. "Lori did an awesome job curating a racing season with more out-of-league competition and we are so excited to cap off our regular season racing two great teams that have both been making an impact on the national level."
The members of the Princeton Open Class of 2019 are Kristen Albrecht, Melissa Curtis, Kate Elfers, Riley MacAulay, Isabella Nappa, Nicole Neville, Ciara Nutter, Rachel Reed, and Erica Swartwout.
