Monmouth Beats Princeton, 7-1
April 05, 2018 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers (5-12) dropped a mid-week non-conference tilt to the Monmouth Hawks (8-15), 7-1, at Clarke Field on Thursday afternoon.
Monmouth scored two runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to put the game away. Chris Davis, Asher Lee-Tyson, Jesper Horsted and Joseph Flynn each had a hit for the Tigers. Princeton's pitching staff struck out nine batters in the loss.
The Tigers had the first base runner reach scoring position in the second frame as a fielder's choice and a walk put two runners on with two out, but a flyout end the threat. A fielder's choice plated the Hawks their first run in the top of third. Monmouth later loaded the bases in the inning, but Jack Anderson got consecutive strikeouts to completed the inning.
Horsted's sacrifice fly gave Princeton its only run in the bottom of the third. The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the stanza, but a double play retired the side. A few innings later, the road squad took the lead on a fielder's choice and added on as a runner from third touched home on a throw to second base. The Hawks scored their fourth and fifth runs on a two-run double from Ryan Steckline. Another two-run double from Shaine Hughes capped off the scoring for Monmouth in the eighth frame.
Hughes and Steckline led the Hawks with two hits each. Monmouth's bullpen held Princeton to one hit after the third inning. The Hawks' pitching staff struck out 10 Princeton hitters.
Princeton gets back into Ivy League action this weekend at Brown. A doubleheader gets underway at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday (Apr. 7) before one contest on Sunday (Apr. 8). The Tigers took both meetings against the Bears last season.
