Kelly Throws PR in Hammer Throw as Tigers Host Sam Howell Invite

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/6/18) - The Princeton men's track & field team started the Sam Howell Invitational strong with a tremendous effort in the hammer throw and closed just as strong with a hot performance in the 10k.

Junior Adam Kelly threw a PR of 71.92 (235-11) on just his second attempt in the hammer throw.
"Adam had a breakthrough meet," head coach Fred Samara said, "It wasn't just a huge PR throw but five throws over his PR. This meet was a very good early season test for a number of our athletes."
An All-America in this event Kelly cleared 70 meters for the first time in his career with throws of 71.87, 71.50, 70.84 and 70.44. Kelly was just four inches shy of matching the lead of Olympian Rudy Winkler, now competing for Rutgers. Kelly's throw of 71.92 ranks him fifth nationally and is the second best in program history and third best in the Ivy League all-time.

Senior Mitchel Charles took third in the discus, finding 51.57 (169-2) on his fourth attempt, and also had throws of 50.65, 49.30, 48.84 and 48.03. He went on to place fifth in the shot put with a 16.32 (53-6.5). It came on his second attempt, while he also found marks of 16.10, 15.87, 15.85, and 15.81.

Freshman Kelton Chastulik placed sixth in the shot put with a 16.15 (53-0) on his third attempt with throws of 15.88, 15.83, 15.78 and 15.55. Classmate Robbie Otal was fifth in the discus with a toss of 50.70 (166-5) on his second attempt – with all six throws over 48 meters.

In the high jump, freshman Jeffrey Hollis placed third. He easily made it over the opening height of 1.90 (6-2.75), passed on the next height of 1.95 (6-4.75).

Freshman Jack Cahillane was fifth in the pole vault at 4.55 (14-11) clearing the height on his third attempt and passing on the opening height of 4.35.

Junior Ryan Ozminkowski was seventh in the javelin at 47.65 (156-4). It was his only countable throw of the afternoon, passing on his final three attempts.

Princeton won both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Charlie Volker, Austin Carbone, Joseph McGrath, JC Colangelo clocked 42.07 in the 4x100 while Cole Bransford, Brennan O'Connor, Carbone and Justice Dixon posted a time of 3:17.48 in the 4x400.

Carbone was also the runner-up in the 100 at 10.93 with McGrath clocking a PR of 10.96 for fourth place. Colangelo was seventh at 11.23 and senior Maxwell Schwegman was 10th at 11.36.

Senior Josh Freeman won the 400 at 48.04 with sophomore Connor Matthews recording a PR of 48.48 for third and O'Connor fifth at 49.53.
 Sophomore Joey Daniels ran the fastest qualifying time in the 110-mter hurdles at 14.19 – just off of his school record of 14.16, but did not race in the final. Junior Sebastian Silveira, who clocked a 14.95 in the prelims finished fourth with a PR of 14.90.

Freshman Ed Trippas was the runner-up in the steeplechase at 9:09.07 (40.07, 1:14.98, 1:14.37, 1:12.5, 1:13.78, 1:13.59, 1:12.36, 1:07.39). Sophomore Perrin Hagge was seventh at 9:13.64

Freshman Kevin Berry took second in the men's 5000, behind unattached runner Kyle Mueller. Berry ran 15:08.12 (36.32, 1:15.04, 1:15.35, 1:12.85, 1:12.74, 1:13.07, 1:11.39, 1:12.46, 1:12.53, 1:12.32, 1:12.63, 1:12.29, 1:09.17). He steadily improved from the gun moving from 14th into eighth place after 1800 meters. He continued to tick off runners moving into third place at 3400 meters and pushed up into second on the final lap with an incredible kick.

In the final event of the night, senior Rob Stone won the 10k at 29:36.24. Sophomore Gannon Willcutts was second at 29:46.29. Stone stayed in the front pack from start to finish, not wavering out of the top four. He led the race for the final eight laps. Willcutts was also in that top pack sticking in sixth place for the first seven laps before he steadily improved to move into fourth at 4800 meters, third on 6800 meters and then second at 7600 meters.
