Princeton Alums Compete in 3x3 Event in California

Dan Mavraides '11, Kareem Maddox '11, Spencer Weisz '17, Steven Cook '17 and Henry Caruso '17 competed in a 3-on-3 basketball event in Milpitas, Calif., last weekend as the half-court game moves closer to its Olympic debut in 2020.
Mavraides and Maddox are part of the reigning U.S. national championship 3-on-3 team, and Weisz, Cook and Caruso were on the Magnificent Mutts team - all of the teams in the California event aside from the All-America team and those from Serbia and China have canine-themed names - that competed in a different group from the All-America team.
Both the All-America team and the Magnificent Mutts split their pool-round games and advanced to the elimination round, and both won their quarterfinal games to set up a semifinal showdown. There, Maddox co-led All-America with eight points and Caruso led the Mutts with nine in a 20-17 win for All-America, but the New Yorkies took the title over All-America 21-18 in the final.

With Ariel Investments and John Rogers '80 as the team's sponsor, Mavraides' and Maddox's team has won the last two U.S. national titles.
"Over the past year, we won our second national championship and have found ourselves traveling around the world on the weekends representing the U.S. in international competitions," Mavraides said. "John and his company, Ariel Investments, have been our sponsor and without him, none of this would be happening for us or USA Basketball. We are currently the only USA team ranked in the world (ranked 17th)."
Eight men's and eight women's teams will qualify for the Olympics, and the U.S. team, if the U.S. qualifies, will include at least two of the top 10-ranked players in its pool. Mavraides' and Maddox's team and alternates are in the top six spots. Four teams will qualify based on the FIBA rankings list as of Nov. 1, 2019, and the remaining teams will qualify through Olympic qualifying tournaments.
