Hobey Baker Rink to Host First Champions Cup

September 6, 2018 – The National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) and the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL) announced that the first-ever Champions Cup, featuring the Isobel Cup champion Metropolitan Riveters and SDHL champion Luleå Hockey, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. at Princeton's historic Hobey Baker Rink.

"We are so excited to host this historic event for women's hockey," Princeton head coach Cara Morey said. "Hobey Baker Rink is the perfect backdrop for this international contest and for this monumental event in our sport. Princeton has a rich hockey history and has always been committed to supporting and growing the game of women's hockey. This game will allow more exposure for our sport and allow young girls to dream big! I know we are 'Making Patty Kazmaier Proud!' We're looking forward to an exciting game!"
Three players on the Riveters having Princeton connections. Highlighting the roster is the return of Princeton All-America Kelsey Koelzer '17 a NWHL All-Star in her first season. Fiona McKenna '18 recently signed with the Riveters and assistant coach Kelly Nash is now in her second year on the roster, at forward.
"The inaugural Champions Cup, in partnership with our friends at the SDHL, is the first-ever game between champions in professional women's hockey leagues in North America and Europe," said NWHL Founder and Commissioner Dani Rylan. "We believe that Baker Rink is the perfect setting for this historic event, and we thank our friends at Princeton for welcoming us at this historic venue."
Hobey Baker Rink is one of the most storied venues in college hockey. The arena was built over nine decades ago, and has recently undergone a number of renovations. The 2,000-seat rink will provide an incredible backdrop for this monumental international matchup.
"Like our colleagues at the NWHL, the SDHL believes strongly in collaboration across all leagues to help push women's hockey forward," said SDHL Commercial Director Angelica Lindeberg. "We're looking forward to competing in this groundbreaking event, and we're pleased that it's being held at such a prestigious university as Princeton. May the best team win!"
