Women's Squash Team Tops Stanford 6-3 in Philadelphia
November 23, 2019 | Women's Squash
Princeton's women's squash team won for the third time in as many matches on the new season, defeating Stanford 6-3 Saturday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
The Tigers will aim to complete the weekend sweep with Sunday's 2 p.m. match in Jadwin against Drexel, which will have pizza for the first 50 fans and cheer gear.
The Tigers on Saturday's match:
Head coach Gail Ramsay:
"It was a very tough and hard-fought match on both sides. Andrea Toth at number two played some impressive squash. She was hitting with a lot of pace the put her opponent under pressure. She also adjusted well as her opponent changed things up. It was great to see her pull this one out, one of her best matches to date."
Assistant coach Hesham Aly:
"Very happy with the team's performance today. We came into this match well prepared and looking to play our best squash and we did just that. Tomorrow will be an exciting match versus Drexel at home, so hopefully we keep the momentum going."
Junior Emme Leonard:
"Today was an awesome match for our team. Playing Stanford is always a battle, but we all brought great energy and intensity going into the match and that was shown in the results. This week I played at the number three position and competed against one of my best friends from home (Caroline Neave). We have played several times during our junior squash career, but this was the first time we competed with Princeton and Stanford on our shirts. I won in a close five games. After losing the first two games, I adjusted my game plan and really focused on hitting tighter length and wider cross-courts. I remained patient and tried to be more deceptive from the front of court which helped me pull out the win. I am very happy with my performance, and very excited for another battle tomorrow against Drexel."
Sophomore Andrea Toth:
"Couldn't be more proud of the team's performance in today's match. We all came out firing from the beginning and were ready to fight hard the whole way through. I had a very tough match in the number two spot today. I started out the match really nervous and it took me a few rallies to calm my self down but once I did, I really focused on playing the solid basic squash I have been working on with Gail and Hesham this season. I really focused on staying patient and working my opponent, waiting for an opportunity to attack."
Sophomore Emily Rose:
"We had really great momentum moving into today's match from yesterday's win (over Virginia). The energy and focus was definitely high today and we were all hungry for the win. I had a solid four-game win which I feel was fueled by all of the hard work our team has been doing in the preseason and the early part of our season. Gail has really been emphasizing the importance of the goal of the 'process' in our points which entails being patient and setting up an attacking opportunity through consistent and deep length. The games I won today were incredibly decisive, and those can be attributed to using the mentality of 'the process.' Hesham really helped me to refocus in between games and he emphasized the importance of staying control of the T."
