Roth Honored as Honda Sport Award Finalist

PRINCETON, N.J. – Clara Roth's incredible season continued as she was named one of the four finalists for the Honda Sport Award, the Collegiate Women's Sports Awards (CWSA) announced today.
"Clara is so deserving of this honor," said Princeton head coach Carla Tagliente. "The Honda Award recognizes excellence in athletics, academics, service and leadership. It is the most prestigious honor in all of college athletics and we are very proud to have Clara recognized. She is a leader in all facets on and off the field and is a true ambassador of Princeton and the sport of field hockey."

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 44 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics." The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2020 Honda Cup which will be presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 22, 2020, in downtown Los, Angeles.

Roth was named a first-team All-American earlier this week while also earning the First Point USA/NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year the week prior. The junior is the 11th Princeton player to be selected as a finalist. Elise Wong was the most recent Tiger to earn the accolade last year. Katie Reinprecht is the only player in program history (2012) to win the award.

The junior set career highs in goals (16) and points (43), both of which led the team. She led the Ivy League in goals (0.82) and points per game (2.14) while placing second in assists per contest (0.50). She placed inside the top 22 in the country in those categories as well. Roth is now one of 11 players in all-time to reach the 100-point milestone as she now sits 101. Her 31 career helpers are tied for fifth while her 35 goals places her right outside the top 12.

Princeton wrapped up the season at 16-5 overall. During the season, the Tigers registered a 13-game winning streak which was the second longest streak ever. It was the fourth time Princeton had reached the National Championship game.

The nominees were chosen by a panel of coaches representing the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The Honda Sport award winner for field hockey will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.

The CWSA, celebrating its 44th year, has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs.Â
