Princeton's Second Half Run Pushes It Over Marist, 62-50

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A 19-3 sprint during the second half paced Princeton in a 62-50 victory over the Marist Red Foxes at the McCann Arena on Saturday night.

At the 2:19 mark of the third quarter, Marist's Rebekah Hand's layup gave the home squad a 34-33 lead.

By the time, the Red Foxes scored another basket, they trailed by 15.

There was 5:06 left in the game.

The Red Foxes closed within 12, but never seriously threatened the Tigers in the fourth quarter. During head coach Carla Berube's squad's extension, Marist turned the ball over five times.

Trailing by three (7-4) early in the first frame, the Tigers rolled off six of nine to go up one (11-10) at the media timeout. This time, Marist went on a 6-1 run, going in front 16-12. Abby Meyers' trey at the buzzer set the score at 16-15.

A three-pointer on the first possession of the second quarter put the Tigers ahead, but the Red Foxes quickly countered on the next trip down the floor. Marist extended its lead to as many as five before Princeton registered seven of the final eight points of the stanza to take a 28-26 advantage into the break.

Princeton led by five in the third frame before taking a 37-35 advantage into the final 10 minutes.

Prior to the Tigers' big run that put the game out of reach, these two foes combined for 10 lead changes and three ties.

Carlie Littlefield led the road unit with 19 points while Julia Cunningham add 14. Ellie Mitchell was two points shy of consecutive double-doubles, putting up eight points and 13 rebounds. Mitchell also added nine offensive caroms, three assists, three steals and was a team-best +22 in the win.

Princeton improves to 7-1 overall and currently sits with a three-game winning streak. Marist fell to 5-2 this season. The Tigers welcome Hartford to Jadwin on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
