No. 12 Princeton Takes No. 9 Oklahoma State to Final Match in 18-15 Defeat
December 07, 2019 | Wrestling
In the start of a tough test of a weekend, the 12th-ranked Princeton wrestling team traveled to ninth-ranked Oklahoma State, led the Cowboys during the match, and kept the outcome in doubt until the final seconds in an 18-15 defeat Friday night in Stillwater, Okla.
Oklahoma State began with a 6-0 lead because of a medical forfeit for Princeton at 165. The Tigers made up that deficit and then some over the next three matches, with Kevin Parker at 174 and Travis Stefanik at 184 getting decisions before second-ranked Patrick Brucki won a decision over sixth-ranked Dakota Geer at 197 in a national top-10 battle.
Oklahoma State's Auston Harris broke the Tiger run with a decision at heavyweight to square the match at 9-9, and while fourth-ranked Patrick Glory won a top-five battle with third-ranked Nick Piccininni at 125 to give Princeton a 12-9 lead, that was the last lead the Tigers held on the night.
The Cowboys won three straight decisions at 133, 141 and 149 to pull ahead 18-12, with the last of which being the only meeting of top-10 wrestlers that went to Oklahoma State as fourth-ranked Boo Lewallen held off a challenge from 14th-ranked Mike D'Angelo 7-4 at 149.
Princeton needed a pin in the night's final match at 157 to force the team scoring into criteria for a tiebreak, but OSU's Wyatt Sheets battled ninth-ranked Quincy Monday to a 3-2 decision for Monday to seal the 18-15 win.
Princeton's weekend continues as the Tigers head home to face No. 1 Iowa in a 2 p.m. match Sunday. Tickets are available here.
