Princeton Falls To Trinity, Will Face Stanford For Third Place Sunday
February 23, 2019 | Women's Squash
Despite an impressive opening shift, the Princeton women's squash team couldn't pull of a second straight road victory over Trinity. The Bantams advanced to Sunday's Howe Cup national final against top-seeded Harvard with a 7-2 home win over Princeton.
Princeton got the start it wanted, thanks in part to senior co-captain Isabel Hirshberg, who defeated Ashita Bhengra in three tight games to win the #9 match. Hirshberg opened with an 11-9 win, then followed with 11-8 and 11-7 victories to open a 1-0 Princeton lead.
Sophomore Emme Leonard showed some impressive resilience in her win at the #6 position. After dropping an 11-8 game to trail 2-1, she pulled out wins of 13-11 and 11-9 over Jennifer Haley to grab a win at the #6 position.
Freshman Elle Ruggiero nearly pulled off an epic comeback to make it 3-0 Princeton, as she battled back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth game at the #3 position. She fell just short in an 11-8 loss to Salma Alam Eldin to give Trinity its first match, and the Bantams used the momentum from that match to grab the next six victories and advance to the final.
Princeton will play Stanford Sunday at 11 am for third place.
