February 28, 2019 | Women's Ice Hockey
Junior Claire Thompson has been named a finalist for the ECAC Hockey Defenseman of the Year and freshman Sarah Fillier is a finalist for Best Forward as the league announced the finalists for two major awards today.
Thompson led the conference in defenseman scoring averaging 1.05 points per game with eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points in 22 games. Nationally, she is third in the nation in points per game for a defenseman with a 0.93 points game game with eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points in 29 games. Of her eight goals, four were game-winners (vs Brown on Oct. 27, Colgate on Nov. 16, Quinnipiac on Nov. 30, Union on Dec. 8), while four assists were on game winners. On the season, the Tigers are 16-0-2 when Thompson has at least one point. She had seven multiple-point games and had a season-best three point game in a 6-0 win over Colgate. Thompson is a +23 on the season and has 41 blocked shots.
Other finalists for best defenseman include Jaime Bourbonnais (Cornell) and Olivia Zafuto (Colgate). The winner will be announced next Thursday at the ECAC Hockey championship banquet.
Fillier leads the nation in scoring with 1.92 points per game and is also the leader in assists per game with 1.28 apg. She is 10th in Division I in goals per game averaging 0.62 gpg. Fillier has scored 48 points on 16 goals and 32 assists. She did that, even more impressively, while missing four games to compete for Hockey Canada at the Four Nations Cup. A two-time Hockey Commissioner's Association Rookie of the Month, Fillier was also a two-time ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month and earned three ECAC Hockey weekly honors. She was named the NCAA First Star of the Week on January 8 and put up a six-game goal-scoring streak of nine points and a nine-game point scoring streak totaling 23 points. Fillier is the first Princeton skater since 2006 to have a five-point game and has 16 games with at least two points. With a +21 on-ice rating, Fillier has won 283 face offs (53.9%) and has blocked 18 shots.
Other finalists for best forward include Loren Gabel (Clarkson) and Jessie Eldridge (Colgate). The winner will be announced next Thursday at the ECAC Hockey championship banquet.
Princeton hosts St. Lawrence this weekend in the ECAC Hockey quarterfinal best-of-three series. The series kicks off Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m., game on Saturday and 3 p.m., Sunday if necessary. Buy your tickets now.
