Yale Deals Tigers First Ivy Defeat
February 08, 2019 | Men's Basketball
A three-way tie atop the Ivy League is where it stands heading into Saturday night's games after Yale handed the Princeton men's basketball team a 74-60 loss Friday night in New Haven.
Â
That, coupled with a 98-96 triple-OT win for Harvard at Columbia, has the Tigers, Bulldogs and Crimson all at 4-1 in the league. Cornell is a game back at 3-2.
Â
Princeton started by keeping Yale off the board for nearly the first three minutes of the game, but the Bulldogs quickly pulled even at 5-5 after the early drought. Yale soon took off on a 9-0 run that turned a two-point Princeton lead into an 18-11 Yale advantage just before the midway point of the first half, and though the Bulldogs were up as many as 15 points before the opening 20 minutes were through, Princeton came out of the locker room strong to start the second half. The Tigers went on a 15-4 run to erase a 38-27 Yale lead and knot it up at 42-42, but no sooner did Princeton do that than Yale went on a 13-2 run to reopen a double-digit lead at 57-46 with less than nine minutes left.
Â
After that point, Princeton got no closer than three at 63-60 inside of three minutes to go, but the Tigers stalled there as Yale scored the last 11 points of the game.
Â
Richmond Aririguzoh led the way for Princeton with 17 points while Jaelin Llewellyn had 15, and Miye Oni had a big night for Yale with 35 to go with 12 rebounds. Alex Copeland added 15 for the Bulldogs.
Princeton senior Devin Cannady returned from a three-game suspension and scored eight points.
Â
Princeton will head to Brown for a 6 p.m. tip Saturday on ESPN+.
Statement on the record from Ben Chang, Princeton University spokesperson:
