Sholars Highlights Standout Performances At Valentine Invite

BOSTON – The Princeton Men's Track and Field team nabbed many performances that put it among the very best in the Ivy League at BU Valentine Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Greg Sholars posted a top-10 finish in a 203-person field (200m), running a 21.63, tied for the fourth quickest in indoor program history. It's also the second best among Ivy foes this winter. Simang'aliso Ndhlovu (22.27) and Austin Carbone (22.29) were inside the top 50.

Two personal-bests were broken in the 3,000m with Viraj Deokar (8:11.08) and Ed Trippas (8:11.17). With over 200 racers in the competition, Deokar was 19th, Trippas 21st and Jeremy Spiezio 33rd (8:17.04). Deokar recorded the third speediest pace in the Ivy League while Trippas is now fourth and Spiezio fifth.

Michael Phillippy had the 20th fastest time (192 runners) for the 400m, posting a 48.868 (a personal-best). Justice Dixon ran a 49.03 (27th), another career mark. Connor Matthews was 31st (49.09). All three have now secured top 10 times in the conference.

The 4x400 group (Sholars, Dixon, Phillippy, Matthews) had the 10th fastest tempo ever (3:14.13), good for second between 54 quadrants.

Sam Ellis had the best run in the mile for Princeton (4:02.93), placing 18th, ahead of 260 participants. Eli Krahn had a personal-low (4:07.08), securing 38th as did Perrin Hagge (4:09.62), snagging 47th. Ellis sprinted to the second lowest mark in the Ivy League while Krahn is fourth and Hagge is eighth.

Scott Thompson (2:26.24) dispatched a top-10 time (seventh), in front of 90 contestants during the 1,000m. Cole Sandvold won his heat (2:28.33) with a new personal record, finishing 16th.

Kieran McDermott ran his best time of the winter with a 1:53.09 in the 800m as did Joseph Sartini ran to a personal-best 1:54.7 and Drake Anzano (1:57.52).

Cole Bransford finished 12th in the 500m (1:05.11) out of 63 runners. Austin Carbone was 13th (7.063) in the 60m event among the 35 competitors.

The Tigers will host the Princeton Invitational next Saturday (Feb. 16) at Jadwin Gym.
