Princeton Takes Down Dartmouth Behind Gnazzo's Gem, 8-2
March 24, 2019 | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Behind Andrew Gnazzo's 11-strikeout performance, the Princeton Tigers secured an 8-2 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green on Sunday afternoon at Bainton Field.
Gnazzo set a new career high with his 11 punchouts. He scattered seven hits and allowed four walks. Nadir Lewis led the Tigers with three hit and two runs while Max West produced four RBI in the victory.
Chris Davis led off for Princeton with a double down the right field line. Two batters later, he scooted home on a single up the middle from Lewis. A groundout collected the Tigers' second run before West knocked in Lewis with a hit to make it 3-0.
Dartmouth's first scoring threat came in the second inning with runners on second and third, but a groundout finished the frame. The Big Green got a run back on a single to right field in the fourth stanza. The Tigers had a chance to add on with two players in scoring position, however a strikeout stopped the opportunity.
The road squad crept within one on another RBI single in the top of the sixth, but Ramzi Haddad countered with a two-run home run just over the outstretched glove of the left fielder in Princeton's next at-bat.
In the seventh stanza, Lewis opened up with a hit. After a walk and hit-by-pitch, the bases were left loaded for West with no out. The senior ripped a ball to left center that cleared everyone, pushing the Tigers' advantage to six, 8-2.
Lewis, playing in center field, caught the final four outs as Princeton secured the victory. The Tigers improved to 4-13 overall and 1-2 in the Ivy League. The Big Green dropped to 7-11 this season and 2-1 in the conference.
Princeton heads on the road next weekend to take on Harvard (Mar. 30-31). The doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 30) gets underway at 11:30 a.m.
