After Best Postseason Since 2011, Lightweight Women Target Top-Ranked Stanford Saturday
March 27, 2019 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
Watch Live on ESPN+
The Princeton lightweight women have done a remarkable job taking steps forward each season, and they will get a sense of just how significant another step in 2019 will be during their 2019 season opener this weekend. The third-ranked Tigers will host reigning IRA champion and top-ranked Stanford this Saturday morning during a full morning of Princeton racing on Lake Carnegie.
The Tigers have won medals in both postseason races each of the last two years, including a silver medal at the Eastern Sprints last year — the program's best finish since 2011. While they weren't able to make up the gap against Stanford in the IRA final, the Tigers did cut four seconds off their first loss to the Cardinal, which showed just how far that boat came.
While the losses of rowers Kathleen Noble and Emily Schneider, as well as coxswain Megan Mirabella, leave important shoes to fill this season, there is no shortage of returning talent from last year. The top three Tiger boats that competed at Sprints won a silver medal, and there are 10 returning rowers from that group who will be in competition for 1V seats. There is also the impressive freshman trio of Camille Boylan, Daisy DeVore and Kate Reynolds that leads the impressive Class of 2022.
The new Class of 2015 Cup will be the prize for the 1V race, which is set to go off at 10:30 am Saturday. Stanford, led by former Tiger great Kate Bertko '06, is the unanimous top-ranked team in the coaches preseason poll, while Princeton stands only a couple points behind Boston University for the third spot.
Princeton will compete twice on Lake Carnegie this season, including an April 20 home race against Georgetown for the Class of 2006 Cup; all Tiger home races this season are set to stream live on ESPN+; if you are not a subscriber yet, you can do so here.
