March 27, 2019 | Women's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers come in the No. 18 position in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Poll, the organization announced today.
The Tigers dropped one spot from last week and will take on the No. 16 Wagner Seahawks on Saturday (Mar. 30) at DeNunzio Pool (4 p.m.). Prior to the game, the team will honor its two seniors, Eliza Britt and Lindsey Kelleher. Those two have been a part of 81 victories and have helped Princeton reach the CWPA Championship Game in each of the past two seasons.
Top 11 teams remained the same in the CWPA Varsity Poll. USC, Stanford, UCLA, Calif., and Hawaii are the top five while Michigan is the top CWPA school at No. 6.
Princeton and Wagner will face off for the second time this season. The Seahawks took an 11-10 decision in February in a game that featured six ties. Amy Castellano registered five goals in the loss. Princeton is 17-2 all-time against Wagner, its only losses coming this year and in 2016.
Castellano was named the CWPA Player of the Week for the second time in 2019 after her performance during the second portion of the California trip. The junior is having a career campaign, posting 57 goals, 30 assists along with 37 steals and 12 drawn ejections. She has scored in every game except for two and has 17 multi-goal performances. Castellano has produced a .582 shooting percentage which would be a career-best.
Laura Larkin (35), Kelleher (31), Britt (31) have also added at least 30 goals for the Tigers so far. Kelleher is second on the squad with 72 points behind Castellano (77). Larkin has secured 18 assists, 19 drawn ejections and 12 steals in her first collegiate year. Princeton is averaging 11 goals per game as it has eight players with at least 10 tallies. Marissa Webb have a .541 save percentage in 17 starts for head coach Derek Ellingson's squad.
After this week's contest, Princeton wraps up the regular season with two more CWPA weekends. Next week (Apr. 6-7) is at Harvard where the Tigers battle Saint Francis and Michigan. The following weekend (Apr. 13-14) is at Bucknell where Princeton finishes against Brown and the Bison.
