With Season/Home Opener Slated For End Of March, Heavyweights Introduce Class Of 2022

The Princeton heavyweights, who will compete four times on Lake Carnegie this season — including the March 30 home opener and an April 20 Compton Cup showdown against Harvard — have been building towards a championship push with a strong infusion of talent from the Class of 2022. The freshman class, which brings significant national and international experience to the Shea Rowing Center, has already pushed the program over the offseason, and head coach Greg Hughes and his staff is looking forward to seeing what it can add this spring.

Here is a look at the Princeton Class of 2022.

Julia Campbell
Milwaukee, Wis. • Whitefish Bay

Before Princeton — coxed the Milwaukee Rowing Club junior women's team all four years … selected as one of three coxswains in the USA to compete for the Women's Junior National High Performance team in 2016 … initiated and led the Whitefish Bay High School Mock Trial Team's participation in Project Street Youth, a program run by the State Bar of Wisconsin's Young Lawyers Division that aids Milwaukee's homeless youth … led the Whitefish Bay Mock Trial Team's student efforts to help establish mock trial teams throughout Milwaukee's Public High Schools … served as service/outreach coordinator and president of mock trial team … Cygnus Scholarship recipient … received Whitefish Bay High School's Merit Award … Meredith Scrivner Advocacy Award recipient.

Personal — born Oct. 26, 1999 … daughter of Scott and Christina Campbell; father is a member of the Princeton Class of 1986 … has a younger brother John and a younger sister Maria … enjoys mock trial, traveling and cooking … plans to study politics with a certificate in Spanish.

Axel de Boissard
London, England • St. Paul's School

Before Princeton — coxed Great Britain at both the 2017 and 2018 Junior World Championships; won gold in the 8+ in 2018 and earned bronze in the 8+ in 2017 … won the youth eights at the Head of the Charles and the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup, and set records in both events … won the Schools Head of the River three times and the National Schools Regatta four times … named a "John Colet Scholar" at St. Paul's School.

Personal — born July 6, 2000 … son of Shannon and Gael de Boissard … has a younger brother Hugo … plans to study economics at Princeton.

Rhys Drout
Dedham, Mass. • Noble & Greenough

Before Princeton — won gold at the 2017 and 2018 Northeast Regionals … won silver at the 2017 NEIRAs and bronze at the 2018 NEIRAs … four-year cross country letterwinner … finished seventh overall in 2018 New England Championships … led team to 2018 league title.

Personal — born Aug. 26, 2000 … son of Raquel D'Oyen and Michael Drout … has a younger brother Mitchell … loves distance running and qualified for the 2019 Boston Marathon … plans to study neuroscience on the Pre-Med track.

Jonas Juel
Oslo, Norway • Wang Videregaende Skole

Before Princeton — finished 11^th at the 2018 U23 World Championships in the single sculls … finished seventh at the 2017 Junior Worlds in the single sculls and 16^th in quadruple sculls at the 2016 Junior Worlds … reached the final of the Thames Challenge Cup at the 2018 Henley Royal Regatta with NSR Oslo … won two single sculls national titles, as well as one apiece in the eight and the double scull … competed in cross country skiing and biathlon for 10 years … had multiple top-five finished in those national competitions, including second place at the 2015 Youth Nationals in the biathlon.

Before Princeton — on silver in the 8+ at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships … won gold in the 8+ at the 2018 CanAmMex Regatta … claimed bronze at the 2018 Youth Nationals in the 4+ with PNRA/Mercer … lettered in wrestling, soccer and lacrosse … won district title in wrestling and qualified for states; led team to 2017 state title … senior class secretary and junior class treasurer.

Before Princeton — won the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta … won two national championships and three state championships … named vice-captain of boats … played Aussie Rules Football.

Vanja Obradovic
Novi Sad, Serbia • Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj

Before Princeton — placed fifth in the straight four at the 2017 U23 World Championships … finished fourth in the coxed four at the 2016 World Junior Championships … won silver in the coxed four at the 2016 European Junior Championships … won 2016 national title in the straight four and quad (U19) and 2014 national title in the coxless pair (U17) … helped team win top national team honor in 2016.

Personal — born Oct. 22, 1998 … son of Dragan and Dragana Obradovic; father rowed for Yugoslavia at the 1980 Olympics … has two older sisters Iva and Dunja, and two older brothers Zoran and Sas; Iva rowed the single for Serbia in the 2008 Olympics, and also rowed for California … enjoys cycling and reading … considering studying psychology.

Nathan Phelps
Ridgefield, Conn. • St. Luke's

Before Princeton — won gold in the 2018 Youth Nationals 4x … stroked the 4x at the Junior World Championships … won gold in the 2018 SDCC (4x), the 2017 Head of the Charles (4+) and the 2017 U19 Club Nationals (4x) … lettered in skiing, lacrosse and competed in rugby … recipient of the Most Improved Award and the Cole-Campbell-Walsh Award … earned Departmental Distinction in Design honor.
