Princeton Retains Oldest Collegiate Rowing Trophy, The Childs Cup, For 10th Straight Year
April 13, 2019 | Heavyweight Rowing
The seventh-ranked Princeton heavyweight rowing team improved to 4-0 on the season and retained the Childs Cup for the 10th straight year to highlight an impressive morning at Overpeck Lake Park.
The varsity eight opened its Ivy League season by taking the Childs Cup race in 5:34.5, while Penn finished second in 5:38.9 and Columbia took third in 5:41.7. The 2V and 3V also stayed perfect with strong wins; the 2V left the field and defeated Columbia by 12.3 seconds, while the Princeton 3V edged the 4V by .3 of a second, and both defeated Columbia by more than 35 seconds.
Princeton has now won a series-best 51 Childs Cups, including 25 out of the last 26. It has also won historic Cups in back-to-back weeks, as the Tigers topped the Midshipmen last weekend for the Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup.
The seventh-ranked Tigers will start to face higher-ranked competition next weekend when they host third-ranked Harvard for the Compton Cup on Lake Carnegie. That regatta is set to begin at 9 am, and it will be streamed live on ESPN+.
