Lightweight Women Make Big Statement At Knecht Cup With Silver Finish; Fours Claim Gold In Thriller
April 14, 2019 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
The Princeton women's lightweight rowing team announced itself as a legitimate national contender in its opener against Stanford, and the Tigers made another big statement Sunday morning in the Knecht Cup regatta on Cooper River. The Tiger V8+ took down the Eastern field and finished as the runner-up to #1 Stanford, while the fours edged Boston University by the slimmest of margins to claim gold.
Princeton entered the weekend as the #3 team in the nation, but the Tigers should move up a place after topping #2 Boston University by more than four seconds at the Knecht Cup final. Stanford grabbed the win in 6:32.8, and once again Princeton remained in the mix with the top crew in the country. Princeton finished in 6:37.2, while Boston University finished in 6:41.2. The next time those boats meet will be May 5 at the Eastern Sprints, when the Tigers will try to claim their first Eastern title since 2011.
Princeton also raced a 'B' in the eights, and it finished sixth in the petite final in 7:40.8.
The fours provided one of the most dramatic finals of the entire weekend. Princeton won the 'A' final by .02 of a second over Boston University, and 2.72 seconds over Stanford.
Princeton will return to action next Saturday when it competes for the Class of 2006 Cup against Georgetown on Lake Carnegie. The regatta will be streamed live on ESPN+.
