PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers make the trip to Monmouth tomorrow (Apr. 3) for a mid-week non-conference tilt vs. the Hawks.
This will be the 39th meeting all-time between Monmouth and Princeton with the Hawks holding a 20-18 advantage. Princeton has not won against Monmouth since the 2013 season (six games). These two teams met twice in 2018 with Monmouth earning a 7-1 decision at Clarke Field and a 2-1 walk-off victory at home in extra innings.
Princeton is 5-15 this season and 2-4 in the Ivy League. The Tigers have managed to salvage the final game in each series vs. Dartmouth and Harvard. After dropping the first two games against the Crimson, the Tigers' bats busted out for 16 runs, their highest run total in nearly three years. Five players for Princeton had multi-hit games with Nadir Lewis and Joseph Flynn pacing the group with three each. Max West had four RBI while Flynn and Lewis combined for six more.
Jake Boone leads the squad in hitting (.341), total hits (29) and is tied for the team high in stolen bases (four). Lewis (.308) and West (.304) are also hitting over .300. Lewis leads the unit in slugging (.500), posting seven doubles, two home runs and a triple, and on-base percentage (.415). Five different players have at least 10 RBI.
Ryan Smith has thrown 31 2/3 innings in his six appearances, recording a 2.84 ERA and 40 strikeouts. The pitching staff has posted 8.9 strikeouts per nine innings.
Monmouth is 10-14-1 this season after starting 1-9, picking up victories over Eastern Carolina, Maryland Eastern Shore, George Mason, Longwood, Wagner, Hofstra, Saint Peter's. Last year, the Hawks reached the MAAC Championship Round for the first time in program history. JD Andreessen (.323) is right in front of Zach Schild (.322) for the group lead in batting. The two have combined for 45 RBI to pace the offense. JP Walsh has snagged a .300/.409/.422 slash line along with 26 runs and nine stolen bases.
Following this contest, Princeton welcomes Columbia to Clarke Field this weekend (Apr. 6-7).
