Princeton Takes Down Villanova, 6-4
April 24, 2019 | Baseball
PLYMOUTH MEETING – Princeton scored four times in the first two innings en route to a 6-4 victory over the Villanova Wildcats at the Villanova Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon.
The first three hitters for the Tigers reached base to begin the game before a fielding error produced the first run. An RBI groundout made the contest 2-0 before Taylor Beckett's single to left field gave the Tigers their third run of the frame. A balk put the Tigers in front 4-0 in the second inning.
Villanova did not get their first hit until the third stanza, but that batter was erased by Max West on a steal attempt.
Nadir Lewis opened up the top of the fifth with a walk and then stole second base. Harding singled through the left side that let the speedy center fielder circle the bases and add an insurance run for Princeton. The Wildcats got their first runner in scoring position in the fifth, but he was left stranded.
Jake Boone's RBI single in the next half frame put the Tigers up, 6-0. The home unit registered its first run on a double play in its next at-bat along with a run-producing infield knock.
Villanova cut its deficit in half in the eighth with a sacrifice fly and another infield hit. Conor Nolan earned his third save of the year with a scoreless frame in the ninth.
Rabin picked up his third win of the year, going five innings, giving up one hit and striking out three. Chris Davis led the squad with three hits while Boone and Beckett combined for four hits.
Princeton, winners of five of its last six games, takes on Brown at Clarke Field this weekend (Apr. 26-27). It's Student Day on Saturday with a pregame tailgate before game two of the doubleheader. There will be free hot dogs and cookies for the first 50 students along with games and activities.
