Third-Ranked Tigers Retain 1999 Cup Against Historic Rival Harvard On Charles River
April 06, 2019 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
One week after Princeton showed the nation that it belonged inside the top tier of the sport, the Tigers showed their most historic rival that they weren't ready to give up the Class of 1999 Cup.
The third-ranked Tigers, who stayed within three seconds of reigning IRA national champion Stanford in the season opener last weekend, posted a dominant open-water victory over fourth-ranked Harvard Saturday morning on the Charles River. Princeton won three of four races during the morning, including the V4 and the pairs.
"The boat felt the determination to win the Class of 1999 Cup from the very start of the race, but we were most satisfied with our consistent drive and grind through the middle 1000 meters, which enabled us to push further off Harvard and produce a pretty solid margin," said sophomore Annie Anezakis. "We were focusing on finding more cohesion from catch to finish within the boat, and I think we did a pretty good job of tying our strokes together - especially with our new bucket in the middle of the boat."
The result did more than just extend Princeton's advantage in the Class of 1999 Cup series to 15-6, but it showed that the close result against Stanford was hardly a fluke.
"Having picked up right where we left off at IRAs last year and with a focus on channelling our positive momentum within our boat, we're definitely building the confidence we need to place ourselves in a pretty good position for the rest of the season," Anezakis said. "Following our seniors who have really helped build our program over the past four years, it's really encouraging to see that not just our boat but the entire team can continue making big steps forward into what I think could be one of our most successful seasons yet."
