Maddox '11 to Compete on U.S. Team at 3x3 World Cup
May 24, 2019 | Men's Basketball
Kareem Maddox '11 was selected as one of four players set to represent the U.S. at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup next month. From USA Basketball:
Featuring four athletes who competed in the 2019 Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals, including tournament MVP Robbie Hummel (Purdue/Valparaiso, Ind.), the 2019 USA Basketball Men's 3x3 World Cup Team has been finalized. In addition to Hummel, the team includes his Ariel Slow & Steady teammate Kareem Maddox (Princeton/Los Angeles, Calif.), who helped his team capture gold at the 3x3 Nationals, and is further bolstered by Canyon Barry (Iowa Wolves/Florida/Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Briante Weber (Sioux Falls Skyforce/VCU/Norfolk, Va.).
The foursome will chase an elusive first gold medal for the USA at the 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, June 18-23 in Amsterdam. In addition to host Netherlands and reigning champion Serbia, nations qualified to compete in the 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Cup for Men are: Australia, Brazil, China, Estonia, France, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mongolia, Poland, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Russia, Slovenia, South Korea, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States.
The USA will play two preliminary games on June 19 and two more June 21. The team opens against four-time defending champion Serbia (10:55 a.m. EDT) followed by Turkey (2:30 p.m. EDT). After a day of rest, the U.S. will face South Korea (10:55 a.m.) and close out preliminary play versus host Netherlands (1:30 p.m. EDT).
Following conclusion of pool play, teams will be seeded based on their records, and the top two teams from each of the four pools advance to the June 22 quarterfinals. Winners will advance to the June 23 semifinals, and the gold and bronze medal games will be played later that day.
Maddox, the 2011 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year at Princeton, has the most FIBA 3x3 experience on the team with 59 games in official 3x3 competition and currently ranks No. 49 in the world rankings and seventh in the USA (as of 5/14/19). He competed in the 2015 USA 3x3 National Championship, was MVP of the 2018 USA 3x3 National Championship, played in three FIBA 3x3 tournaments in 2017, seven in 2018 and competed in the 2019 Nanjing Challenger in China.
"Being on the USA 3x3 World Cup Team is a privilege and an incredible honor," said Maddox. "I was in the stadium when Michael Johnson broke the 200-meter record at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Ever since then, it's been a dream of mine to compete in the Olympics. So, taking this step and representing the USA in the 3x3 World Cup this year is a responsibility I'm taking very seriously. With the Olympics looming, representing the country well and winning in Amsterdam would be a huge step for the USA on our road to the Tokyo 2020 games."
