"The NCAA is always fast and furious and you have to be on your game," said Claire Collins, one of two rowers (Emily Kallfelz) nominated for the Von Kienbusch Award. "Our team has used the experiences from years past to prepare physically, but more importantly mentally. We know how to bounce back from each race throughout the weekend and we know that just because we beat teams earlier in the season, doesn't mean that they will be the same speed at the championships. So, we have learned to attack every race like it is our last, by being focused, prepared, and also confident in our race plan and in each other."
The Tigers had a remarkable performance at the Ivy League Championships, earning five gold medals, the conference title and NCAA automatic bid. The V8 squad dominated its race and was never threatened, taking the top time (6:32.64) over Brown (6:34.86) and Yale (6:35.85). With the win, the Tigers secured the Sally P. Shoemaker Trophy, the top point total for all boats and the conference's NCAA automatic bid with the highest point total in the V8, 2V8 and V4 events.
In the NCAA final points standings, the Tigers recorded 48 points while Brown was second with 42. Yale (36) followed along with Harvard (28), Penn (25), Dartmouth (17), Cornell (11) and Columbia (9). The Tigers' point total for all boats was 87, 12 more than Brown (75). Yale was third (52) with Harvard (52), Penn (41), Dartmouth (28), Cornell (19) and Columbia (15) rounding out the field.
Last year, the 1V posted its best NCAA finish since 2013, securing the fifth position. Princeton finished ninth overall in the team standings, its 20th Top-10 finish in program history, and either held its seed or improved in all three competitions. Princeton ended with 92 points, a total that was only 12 points out of the Top 4.
The 1V unit's Friday heat with UCF, Iowa, Brown and Navy is at 9:12 a.m. The 2V8 group's heat with Navy, Brown, Washington and UFC is at 9:48 a.m., while the V4's preliminary (Rhode Island, Virginia, Texas, Rutgers and Marist) is at 11 a.m. The semifinals for 1V will either be at 8:36 or 8:48 a.m., on Saturday with the Grand Final at 11:12 a.m., on Sunday. 2V8's semifinal on Saturday will be either 9:36 or 9:48 a.m., with Sunday Grand Final at 10:48 a.m. The V4 semifinal goes off at either 10:12 a.m. or 10:24 a.m., with the Grand Final set for 10:24 a.m. on Sunday.
