Sophomore Jakob Kintzele won his first collegiate cross country race, winning the individual title as Princeton opened the 2019 season at the Fordham Fiasco. The Tigers as a team finished second out of 12 teams racing in Van Cortlandt Park.
Ranked No. 21 in the preseason national poll, Princeton claimed four of the top six finishes overall with Kintzele crossing the line of the 8k race first at 26:17.87. Junior Sam Ellis was third overall at 26:29.27. Sophomore Fahd Nasser was the third Princeton scorer, taking fifth overall at 26:33.91 and he was followed shortly thereafter by junior Kevin Berry at 26:39.07. Junior Cole Sandvold was the final scorer with a time of 29:52.59.
"We had a terrific beginning to our season today," head coach Jason Vigilante said. "We ran a select group of guys and held out our freshmen as well as our varsity starters. That being said, Jakob, Sam, Fahd and Kevin all trained well over the summer and ran better than they ever have today. In particular I'm really proud of Jakob to get the win, he's got his sights set on coming back here in eight weeks and contributing to the program at Ivy Heps and this is a shot in the arm for his confidence."
The Tigers had the best average time at 27:10.55 and was six points out of first place behind Rutgers' 59 with 65 points. Penn was third with 95 points, while Harvard was sixth as the third Ivy League team competing.
"We certainly have a lot of training ahead and two more competitions before we return to Van Cortlandt Park yet for right now we are pleased."
Princeton's next competition is Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.
