No. 6 Tigers Start Road Trip With Win at Quinnipiac
January 28, 2020 | Women's Ice Hockey
Three first-period goals lifted the sixth-ranked Princeton women's hockey team to a 3-2 win Tuesday night at Quinnipiac in Princeton's first game back from first-semester final exams.
The win lifts Princeton into a tie for second place in the ECAC Hockey League with 21 points alongside Harvard in a crowded race for first-round home ice in the ECAC playoffs. Cornell leads with 26 points, and the Tigers and Harvard are a point in front of Yale and Clarkson heading into this weekend's games. Princeton will head to Yale and Brown Friday and Saturday.
Princeton opened the scoring just more than five minutes into the game when Shannon Griffin won the puck behind the Quinnipiac net and sent it to Annie MacDonald, who buried a shot from the slot.
Just more than three minutes later, Maggie Connors fired twice on net from the slot, finding the net on her second try.
Claire Thompson had Princeton's third goal with less than three minutes to go in the opening period, taking a centering pass from Connors and sending it in from beyond the faceoff circles to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead heading for the first ice cut.
It stayed 3-0 until less than nine minutes remained in the game, when Taylor Girard spoiled the shutout for Quinnipiac. Sadie Peart had a goal in the final second of the game to make the 3-2 final.
