Men’s Basketball Opens Ivy Play With 78-64 Triumph at Penn

PHILADELPHIA – A season-high 52 points in the paint helped the Princeton University men's basketball team start Ivy league play off on a high Saturday night inside the Palestra as the Tigers triumphed over the University of Pennsylvania, 78-64.
Along with its season-best 52 points in the paint, the Tigers, winners of four out of its five last games, had an efficient shooting night as they connected on 29-of-54 of their field goal attempts for a shooting percentage of 53.7. Princeton also controlled the boards, out-rebounding Penn 40-35.
Princeton was led by junior Ryan Schwieger who finished with a game and career-high 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. He was one of three Tigers in double figures as sophomore Jaelin Llewellyn went 5-of-9 from the field and had 18 points along with a career-high 14 rebounds. Senior Richmond Aririguzoh also had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds and freshman Tosan Evbuomwan chipped in eight points on 4-of-7 shooting.
The early stages of the game were a back-and-forth battle; with Princeton up 10-8 a Lllewellyn layup with 15:09 on the clock followed by a pair of Aririguzoh free throws and a Schwieger layup extended the Tigers' lead to eight points at 16-8 with 13:08 left in the half.
The Quakers trimmed Princeton's lead to four points at 29-24 with 3:48 on the clock, but the Tigers got hot in the late stages of the half. Schwieger connected on a layup with 3:28 remaining in the half then Llewellyn followed with a three-pointer to give Princeton a 34-25 advantage with 2:51 on the clock.
Schwieger would end the half by stepping into a three-pointer from the top of the circle with just 0:03 remaining, giving the Tigers a 39-27 advantage.
Princeton maintained a double-figure lead over the Quakers for the entirety of the second half; Penn was able to trim the lead to 10 points at 55-45 with 11:44 on the clock but an 8-0 run led by a Schwieger layup with 10:46 left to play and also featuring a jumper by senior Jose Morales, another Schwieger layup and a layup by Evbuomwan with 8:59 on the clock extended Princeton's lead back out to 18 points at 65-47.
Another driving layup by Evbuomwan with 6:37 remaining in the contest grew Princeton's lead to 21 points at 69-48. Penn attempted to battle back, making it a 69-58 game with 3:17 on the clock but a pair of free throws by sophomore Drew Friberg with 2:26 left to play steadied the ship for Princeton.
Schwieger knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:03 remaining and Llewellyn did the same with 42 seconds left to play, ensuring the Tigers would hold on for the 78-64 triumph.
