Men’s Basketball Outlasts Penn, 63-58

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University men's basketball team moved to 2-0 in Ivy League play after outlasting the University of Pennsylvania 63-58 Friday night inside Jadwin Gymnasium.
The Tigers have now swept the season series against Penn for two-straight seasons and Franklin C. Cappon-Edward C. Green '40 Head Coach Mitch Henderson improved his record as head coach of the Tigers to 15-4 against the Quakers. Penn also entered Ivy League play scoring a conference-high 79 points per game; their 58 points against the Tigers was a season-low and has averaged 61 points per game in its two games against Princeton.
Junior Ryan Schwieger led Princeton with a game-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, tying his career-best in three-pointers made which occurred in the Tigers' win over Fairleigh Dickinson University on Saturday, December 14, 2019.
Sophomore Jaelin Llewellyn added 14 points and senior Richmond Aririguzoh contributed eight points, a game-high 16 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Sophomore Drew Friberg went 3-of-5 from downtown as he added nine points, four rebounds and two assists off the bench.
The Tigers also held a pair of on-court recognitions during the game. Elaine Athanssiades W61 was honored for her gift to establish the Ted Athanassiades '61 Assistant Coaching Position for Princeton men's basketball and Steve Mayer '81 was honored for his gift to establish the H.G. Levine Broadcast Center.

While the Quakers got off to an 8-0 start, a layup by freshman Tosan Evbuomwan with 17:49 on the clock halted their run. Inside the 16th minute of the half Schwieger would sink a pair of three-pointers then Llewellyn would convert on a driving layup with 15:35 left in the half, knotting the score 10-10.
Another layup by Llewellyn, with 11:07 remaining in the half, followed by a Friberg three-pointer with 9:53 on the clock gave Princeton its first lead of the contest at 19-15. While the Quakers responded with a three-pointer with 9:33 left in the half, Princeton's offense would erupt to end the half. A layup by Llewellyn with 9:16 on the clock sparked a 12-0 run and the Tigers would take a 36-28 advantage into halftime.
Sophomore Ethan Wright opened the second half by stepping into a three-pointer with 19:47 remaining that gave Princeton a double figure lead again, 39-28. With 17:33 on the clock Schwieger found Evbuomwan cutting baseline who threw down a thunderous two-handed dunk that gave the Tigers a 43-30 advantage.
Princeton's biggest lead of the game was 16 points and came after another Wright three-pointer with 16:05 left to play made it 46-30. A pair of Penn free throws narrowed the lead to 14 points, but a layup by Aririguzoh with 13:37 left to play gave the Tigers a 48-32 lead, its second advantage of 16 points.
The Quakers got hot to close the game out, trimming the lead to just three points at 61-58 with 39 seconds on the clock. With 10 seconds remaining senior Jose Morales took the ball all the way to the basket and finished through the foul for the and-one and gave the Tigers a 63-58 lead, which would be the final score of the game.
