More History at Stake as Rutgers Visits Princeton in Sunday's Dual Finale
February 18, 2020 | Wrestling
In a season that has already seen 14th-ranked Princeton end a 34-year drought of Ivy League titles and a 34-year skid against Cornell, the Tiger wrestling team will aim for more history Sunday in Jadwin Gym.
No. 25 Rutgers will visit for a 6 p.m. match as the teams renew the B1G-Ivy rivalry. Tickets are available here, and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
Princeton will be aiming to break Rutgers' 23-match win streak in the series since a tie on Nov. 30, 1991. Princeton's last win over Rutgers came the season before, on Dec. 8, 1990.
Thanks to the Tigers' win over Rider in December, Princeton will be aiming for its first Jersey sweep since the 1982-83 season. The Tigers have faced New Jersey's other two Division I programs, Rutgers and Rider, in the same season 18 times since last sweeping the pair 37 years ago. The teams met every year since the sweep through the 1989-90 season, again in the 2005-06 season, and again annually since 2009-10.
Princeton counts four national top-five wrestlers according to Intermat, with No. 3 Patrick Glory at 125, No. 4 Matthew Kolodzik at 149, No. 4 Quincy Monday at 157, and No. 9 Patrick Brucki at 197. Princeton and Rutgers each have an Intermat top-20 wrestler at two of those weights, with 20th-ranked Nicolas Aguilar at 125 for Rutgers and 19th-ranked Jordan Pagano at 197. The Scarlet Knights also count 10th-ranked Sammy Alvarez at 133 and 13th-ranked Billy Janzer at 184.
The match is the last of the regular season for both teams. Princeton will head to the EIWA Championships in two weekends at Lehigh while Rutgers will host the Big Ten Championships that weekend.
