Fillier's Double-OT Game Winner Sends No. 6 Princeton to ECAC Semifinals
March 01, 2020 | Women's Ice Hockey
After more than 91 minutes of hockey Sunday afternoon - and then evening - at Baker Rink, Sarah Fillier, a sophomore whose career is already climbing the Princeton women's hockey program's record lists, added another note.
With 8:32 to go in the second overtime of the longest Princeton women's hockey game in three years, Fillier's rebound goal put the second-seeded Tigers over national No. 10 and seventh-seeded Quinnipiac 3-2 and into the ECAC semifinals.
Princeton will face third-seeded Clarkson in that semifinal at top-seeded Cornell next Saturday, March 7, at 4 p.m.. Cornell, ranked No. 1 in the nation, will face fourth-seeded Harvard in the other semifinal at 1 p.m. The Crimson went even longer to secure a semifinal bid, beating Yale in the third overtime of their game Sunday at Harvard. Next Sunday's ECAC championship final will be at 2 p.m. at Cornell.
Â
Princeton was in that position after Quinnipiac scored twice in the final four minutes of the third period to force a tie, including with 87 seconds to go on an extra-attacker goal.Â
The 2-2 tie persisted into a second overtime, making Sunday's game Princeton's longest since another against Quinnipiac, a triple-OT game on Feb. 24, 2017 in the first game of that year's ECAC quarterfinals at Baker.Â
Fillier had a point on all three goals, raising her career total to 111 points, 69 assists and 42 goals. Though her Tiger career isn't quite half complete, Fillier is already more than halfway to Princeton's career points record of 218, and she's 10th in program history in career assists.Â
Fillier had the Tigers' first goal of the night, when with six-plus minutes to go in the second period, she carried the puck from beyond the center line and fired from the top of the faceoff circle, sending it under the crossbar to open the scoring.
Â
Princeton tacked on another less than three minutes into the third period, when Claire Thompson, a senior blueliner who is among the top scoring defenders in program history, fired a laser of her own from beyond the faceoff circle on the power play to put the Tigers up two.
Â
Thompson stands fifth in scoring in program history, now with 87 points.
Rachel McQuigge, splitting time in goal after Stephanie Neatby logged the entirety of the first two games, made 36 saves in the win.
