October 22, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
PHILADELPHIA – The Princeton University women's volleyball team earned the season sweep over the University of Pennsylvania Friday night inside the Palestra, outlasting the Quakers 3-2 (25-13, 25-14, 21-25, 30-32, 16-14).
Â
The win moved the Tigers to 13-3 on the season, and 7-1 in Ivy League play. Junior libero earned her 1,000th career dig during the match, as she recorded 18.
Â
Junior Elena Montgomery had a match-high 18 kills, while junior Lindsey Kelly had a match and career-high 60 assists. Kelly topped her previous career-best of 56, from the Tigers match against Brown University on Saturday, October 16, and also led the match in digs with 22. Senior Julia Schner added a match-high six blocks.
Â
The opening set began as a back-and-forth battle; with the score knotted at 6-6, a Montgomery kill sparked a 5-0 Princeton run that gave the Tigers an 11-6 advantage. From there, it was all Tigers as another Montgomery kill at 19-13 led off the 6-0 run the Tigers closed the set out on for their 25-13 victory. It was also in the first set that Dames recorded her 1,000th career dig.
Penn took a 5-4 lead in the second set, but Princeton responded with a 5-0 run to take a 9-5 lead. Ahead 9-6, a junior Melina Mahood kill sparked another 5-0 Tiger run that saw Princeton surge ahead, 14-6. The Tigers did not look back from there, sealing the set at 25-14 following a double block by Kelly and freshman Mariah Haislip.
Â
The Quakers showed resilience in the third set, using a 3-0 run to take a 12-8 lead over Princeton, resulting in a Princeton timeout. A service ace by senior Grace Klepetka narrowed the margin to one point at 17-16, but the Quakers managed to hold on and win the set with a score of 25-21.
Â
A double block by Schner and junior Avery Luoma led off a 4-0 run that gave Princeton a 10-9 advantage in the fourth set, but the Quakers responded with a 7-0 run to jump ahead, 16-10. The Quakers took set point at 24-16, but a Schner kill sparked a 9-0 run that knotted the score at 25-25. Despite Princeton's best efforts, it was outlasted by Penn in a marathon fourth set, 32-30.
Â
Thanks to a pair of Montgomery kills along with a Penn attacking error, the Tigers took a 4-2 lead in the fifth set. Penn battled back to tie it up at 7-7, then took a 13-10 lead. The Tigers went on a 4-0 run that featured three Mahood kills to take match point at 14-13, and ended up outlasting the Quakers 16-14, to win the match 3-2.
