Princeton Shuts Out Brown As Davidson, Donovan And McCarthy Score
October 30, 2021 | Field Hockey
The Princeton field hockey team got the win it needed Saturday afternoon. It almost got the help it needed too, though that part wasn't meant to be.
Controlling only what it could control, Princeton used goals from Sam Davidson, Claire Donovan and Ali McCarthy to take down Brown Saturday afternoon in Providence. The Tigers also needed a Cornell win over Harvard to get back into a tie for first place in the Ivy League, but the Crimson scored two late goals to win in Ithaca 3-1. As a result, Princeton heads into the regular season finale at home against Columbia this coming Saturday one game back of the Crimson, who will host Brown Saturday as well.
Princeton did snap two streaks in the game against Brown. First, there was the two-game losing streak that included a penalty shootout loss at Harvard last weekend. Second, there was the four-game run of overtime games that also came to a stop. In fact, goalie Isla Okkinga, who made three saves for the shutout, played in her sixth career game but for the first time did not play in a game that went to overtime.
After a scoreless first 15 minutes, Princeton would put one in the cage in each of the following three quarters. Davidson, a defender, scored the first goal of her career on a penalty stroke in the second quarter to get it started.
Claire Donovan redirected a cross from Sammy Popper four minutes into the third quarter to make it 2-0. McCarthy then sealed it when she deflected a feed from Hannah Davey to make the final 3-0.
