Women's Volleyball Comes Up Just Short At Dartmouth, 3-2

HANOVER, N.H. – Despite dropping the first two sets and pushing it to five, the Princeton University women's volleyball team came up just short against Dartmouth College, 3-2 (26-24, 25-14, 14-25, 14-25, 16-14) Saturday night inside Leede Arena.
Junior Elena Montgomery finished with a match-high 21 kills and a career-high 20 digs, eclipsing her previous career-best of 18 from Princeton's match on Friday, October 15 at Yale. Junior Lindsey Kelly led the match in assists with 50, and junior Cameron Dames tied for the match-high in digs with 32, also tying her career-high as she recorded 32 digs on Friday, November 1, 2019, against Cornell. Senior Julia Schner had a match-high six blocks.
The opening set began as a back-and-forth battle, until a 3-0 run gave the Tigers a 15-12 advantage. Dartmouth battled back to knot the score at 20-20, but a Montgomery kill put Princeton back in front, 21-20. Unfortunately for Princeton, Dartmouth would battle back to prevail in the set with a score of 26-24.
The Big Green started the second set strong, using a pair of 3-0 runs to gain a 13-6 advantage over the Tigers. A service ace by freshman Nicole Dankinova made it a 16-11 set, but the Big Green responded with a 3-0 run and earned a 19-11 advantage. Dartmouth would hold on win the second set, 25-14.
Princeton would bounce back in the third set; sparked by a junior Melina Mahood kill, the Tigers used a 4-0 to sure ahead 8-2. The Tigers remained in control, taking a 19-12 lead following a freshman Mariah Haislip kill. Princeton would then close the set out with three-straight Montgomery kills, winning their first set of the match 25-14.
Led off by a double block Schner and junior Avery Luoma, a 4-0 run gave Princeton a 6-2 lead early in the fourth set. A Mahood sparked off another 4-0 run, as Princeton surged ahead 9-3. The Tigers remained in control; ahead 20-13, a Luoma kill led off another 4-0 run that gave the Tigers set point as they would go on to force a decisive fifth set, coming out on top 25-14.
A 3-0 run in the fifth set featuring a pair of Dartmouth attacking errors along with a Montgomery kill gave Princeton early momentum in the fifth set, but the Big Green bounced back to take match point at 14-13. A Mahood kill knotted the score at 14-14, but Dartmouth would outlast the Tigers in the dying stages to win the set 16-14, and the match 3-2.
